A magnificent mansion boasting an £8.5 million price tag is a home worthy of a superstar footballer – but not, you might think, a former Manchester United youth team player whose career fizzled out as a teenager.But it is the impressive new residence of David Beckham’s best friend, David Gardner, who for nearly 30 years has been the wingman to his world-famous former team-mate.Mr Gardner, 43, and his Hollywood star fiancee Liv Tyler, 41, are splashing out on the neo-Georgian mansion hidden away in a leafy part of South-West London.Covering more than 12,000 sq ft, the imposing ten-bedroom house boasts a marble-floored hallway, a Grade II-listed drawing room, a manicured lawn and a swimming pool. And should the Beckhams want to stay, there is a coach house that has been converted into a self-contained one-bedroom flat.Mr Gardner and Miss Tyler are moving from their townhouse in Notting Hill, West London, as they need more space to bring up their children Sailor Gene, four, and two-year-old Lula Rose.Mr Gardner also has custody of a son, Gray, 11, from his previous marriage to former Hollyoaks actress Davinia Taylor. And Miss Tyler has a son, Milo, 14, from her marriage to Royston Langdon, singer and bassist with American glam rock band Spacehog.Mr Gardner’s lifestyle is a far cry from his humble roots in Salford, Greater Manchester, but he is quite at home with the A-list celebrities he first encountered through his friendship with David Beckham.Having been dropped by Manchester United at 19, Mr Gardner set himself up as a football agent with Jason Ferguson, son of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex.But his main claim to fame is as Beckham’s dependable companion. The pair regularly chart their escapades together on Instagram and Mr Gardner was at his best friend’s side when Beckham unveiled his new football club franchise in Miami last year. In a birthday card sent to Beckham to mark his 44th birthday on Thursday, Mr Gardner joked that he was on a ‘never-ending world tour’ with the former England captain and is ‘the biggest kid of all’.He started dating Lord Of The Rings star Miss Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler, five years ago after being introduced by supermodel Kate Moss. Miss Tyler spoke about the hunt for a new home in February when she was a guest on Chris Evans’s radio show. Amazingly, it emerged that the parents of Evans’s sidekick, Vassos Alexander, are the sellers.A source close to Mr Gardner said: ‘They want a spacious family house for their children to grow up in. Liv is a real New Yorker and loves the city life, but the idea of having a home with greenery all around them but still within ten miles of Central London is very appealing.‘They’ve looked at a few places but this is definitely the one.’
