Guaido's envoy in Spain condemns Zambrano's arrest

Guaido's envoy in Spain condemns Zambrano's arrest (9 May 2019) Members of the Venezuelan opposition overseas are calling for the international community to condemn the arrest and prosecution of several lawmakers in the crisis-wracked nation.

Antonio Ecarri, envoy in Spain of Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido, said that Wednesday's arrest of the National Assembly's Vice President Edgar Zambrano and investigations against several other lawmakers is an attempt to "silence the voice of Venezuelans".

"Indifference is not an option", Ecarri told reporters in Madrid on Thursday.

He was accompanied by Eudoro Gonzalez, an exiled Venezuelan lawmaker, who said that European Union-led International Contact Group "needs to take Venezuela seriously".

Although the group shares with the opposition the goal for a free and fair election in Venezuela as soon as possible, it considers the government of Nicolas Maduro a necessary stakeholder to achieve a peaceful transition.

Anti-Maduro politicians and activists reject dialogue with the embattled Venezuelan leader.
