What is a reasonable accommodation? / Do you have a medically related challenge at work or in school? Do you feel alone like you can’t ask for help? Asking your employer for reasonable accommodations may be a great course of action. Many people have a medical challenge that prevents them from being as safe and productive as they can be. An employer is obligated to do something to enable an otherwise qualified person to perform a job.
The employer and employee engage in an interactive process to determine what, if any, reasonable accommodation can be made for the employee.
It is important to recognize that for the accommodation to be considered reasonable, it can not cause an undue hardship on the company. Undue hardship would be "action requiring significant difficulty or expense”. The cost and type of the accommodation in relation to the company’s size, resources, and structure of the operations all factor into the final determination.
Engaging in the interactive process and determining reasonable accommodations in the workplace is a core function of Human Resources. Reach out to your team today!
