The Last Jedi threw fans for a loop with a number of unexpected twists and turns. One of the most controversial decisions writer/director Rian Johnson made was killing off Supreme Leader Snoke. Fans have been theorizing about Snoke’s return in Episode IX, but one Reddit user suggests an intriguing way to make this happen: what if Snoke never actually existed? What if he was in Kylo Ren’s mind the whole time?
It sounds ridiculous, we know, but then we started to dive into the theory a little bit more and discovered it might make more sense than we initially thought. For instance, we’ve already seen evidence in the Original Star Wars Trilogy that the Dark Side and the Light Side of the Force can manifest as an individual being entirely different in their good and bad forms. Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were considered two different people; Obi-Wan Kenobi even used this as justification for lying to Luke Skywalker about his father’s true identity. We’ve also seen the new Force projection ability, introduced during The Last Jedi’s climactic battle. What if Kylo Ren, in order to give physical manifestation and justification to his internal struggle between good and evil, ended up creating Snoke as a means to communicate with himself. And what could this mean about the true extent of Kylo Ren’s powers and the mysterious ways of the Dark Side?
This is just scratching the surface of what this theory has to offer. Let’s dive in to explore all the different possibilities.
