Throughout his 39 years as an educator, Bruce Sawdon has dealt with some of Calgary’s most difficult, yet vulnerable, youth. With the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), he has held a variety of roles including teacher, department head, and assistant principal. Since 2004, he has been the principal of Discovering Choices High School. Discovering Choices is composed of four outreach campuses for Calgary students who find that regular school programs and services do not meet their needs. The school’s mandate is to prevent young people from dropping out of school and to support them to complete their education.
Prior to joining the CBE in 1977, he was a Child and Youth Care Worker at William Roper Hull Home, a treatment centre for adolescents. Sawdon is also the former principal of Wood’s Homes School. Sawdon received his B.Ed. from the University of Calgary and M.A. in Educational Administration and Curriculum Design from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
