What does Christian Apologetics Mean? 4 Reasons Why Christian Apologetics is Important

What does Christian Apologetics mean? Why is Christian Apologetics important? A Christian Apologist is someone who defends the Christian faith, exposes false doctrines and teachings, evangelizes the lost, witnessing to those in non-Christian Cults, and teaches sound doctrine according to the Scriptures. There are many ways to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, and learning Christian Apologetics helps equip believers to defend the faith and effectively reach the lost.

What does Christian Apologetics mean? It comes from the Greek word Apologia in 1 Peter 3:15 which means to give a defense, to give a reason for what you believe. Christians need to learn Apologetics so that they can defend the faith, explain why they believe what they believe, and reach the lost with the gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:15). This is personal Christian Apologetics.

In 1 Corinthians 9:22 Paul talked about becoming all things to all people that he might win some to Christ. This means being able to witness to all kinds of people, whether they are Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Muslims, Atheists, whoever, and to share the gospel with them in a way that reaches them where they are at. This kind of Christian Apologetics takes time to learn, experience, studying, and being led by the Holy Spirit. This is the heart of a Christian Apologist, who wants to reach as many as they can in their life, and reaching them where they are at (1 Corinthians 9:22).

In Jude 1:3 we read about the exhortation to defend the faith once delivered to the saints, which means standing for what is true in opposition to what is wrong and false. This kind of Christian Apologist does not win friends, at least not in the world’s eyes, and this can be a challenge for Christians. Nonetheless, Christians are instructed to stand for truth, stand for what is true, and oppose what is false and wrong. To contend for the faith takes prayer and knowing what the Word of God teaches to stand for truth and what is right, and oppose what is wrong (Jude 1:3).

Christian Apologist’s are also to be a Biblical Berean, like those in Acts 17:11. Those in Berea heard Paul preach to them about Jesus Christ and the Gospel, but they did not assume what Paul said what true. The Bereans went to the Scriptures (Bible) examining what Paul was teaching them about Jesus Christ and the Gospel. This is a very important lesson to learn for Christians today, and sadly many Christians do not examine the Scriptures (Bible) to test what their pastor, teacher, or whoever is teaching them. All Christians are to be Biblical Bereans examining the Scriptures to see if what they are being taught is true or false (Acts 17:11).

Christian Apologetics sadly is not taught in most churches, and we need need more churches equipping Christians to be Apologists defending the Christian faith, reaching the lost, and teaching the Scriptures (Bible) in context and truth. The Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Muslims, and even Atheists are being trained on what they believe, and Christians should be equipped on how to defend the faith even more. There are churches that do encourage Christian Apologetics, which is good but we need more pastor and teachers equipping Christians in the faith (Ephesians 4:11-16; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The late Dr. Walter Martin said: Are we willing to do for the truth what the Cults do for a lie?
