Submerged wreck believed to be WW2 German U-boat found off Turkish coast

Remains of a vessel thought to be a World War Two German submarine have been discovered off Istanbul's coastal district of Sile, Turkey's state-run English language broadcaster TRT WORLD reported.

The submarine is believed to be a U-23, one of the six compact U-boats of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine dubbed "Hitler's lost fleet".

Maritime explorer Selcuk Kolay, who was on board a Turkish maritime rescue ship, told TRT that the video confirmed that the wreckage belonged to U-23.

U-23 was scuttled by her own crew in the Black Sea, off the Turkish coast, in 1944 in order to avoid capture by Soviet soldiers.
