Over 2/3rds of this island is a protected nature preserve. No roads, no unescorted tourists. If you wish to explore the jungle, you can pay a very low fee and be guided through certain parts. If you don't, it is a very hefty fine and potential blacklisting from ever travelling here again. Couple that with the snakes, huge spiders, wild pigs and other assorted critters...you get the idea. It's refreshing to see that they take the preservation of the natural resources and beauty of this country as one of their highest priorities. Amazing place...all of it.
