ATTACKING TOOLBOX 5: Driving Through Contact

ATTACKING TOOLBOX 5: Driving Through Contact

When contact is definite and an offload is not a wise option, a ball carrier can still maintain the advantage by staying in a dynamic position and driving powerfully into contact. Sometimes a rugby player can break through and keep going, but if not, at least ground will be gained and the player should be in a better position to present the ball to teammates.

The Attacking Toolbox is a way of looking at option-taking in open play. Taking a player in space with the ball to the point at which a tackle is completed and a ruck is formed, it presents a series of options of what a player can do based on his/her ability and what the defence is doing.
