Arsenal transfer news: Unai Emery wants TWO midfielders he’s formerly managed - Ornstein

That is according to transfer news guru David Ornstein. The Gunners only recruited versatile winger Denis Suarez in January on a loan deal from Barcelona with an option to buy. That represented a disappointing window for Emery, who clearly expressed his desire to acquire two new players. Following two expensive windows, the Arsenal board were adamant they would not be spending vast amounts, however, with loans the only possible form of recruitment. In Emery’s first summer the club made five signings, mounting to over £70million. The former PSG and Sevilla manager does not have autonomy on transfer targets, but many on the board’s radar have a link with the Spanish coach. Speaking on the Arseblog podcast, the BBC Sport journalist said: “I’m told that Unai Emery likes experienced players. “He likes to go with players he knows and trusts, so that certainly explains the Nkunku interest - he played him far more than Thomas Tuchel has played him at PSG this season. “It explains the pursuit of Denis Suarez [who he managed at Sevilla], who I know a number of people within the game have reservations about. “And then the reported interest, once again, in Adrien Rabiot, who Arsenal were keen on during Arsene Wenger’s time at the club and his links to PSG and the French game. “It seemed like he would be signing for Barcelona but they’ve now signed Frenkie de Jong for that position from Ajax. “There are credible reports that Arsenal will now try to come back in for Rabiot. There are people within Arsenal who are very keen that they sign Rabiot or that they make the concerted effort. “He’s very highly admired. There are some complications around him and the people you have to deal with, if you want to do a deal for him, and his salary demands. But I think that’s certainly a one we should keep an eye on.” Ornstein also then went on to explain that Emery was interested in former Stoke midfielder Nzonzi, with whom he worked at Sevilla. Arsenal ended up purchasing the promising 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi, who has made 22 league appearances this season, however. “I have heard Emery would, whether it’s favour or at least strongly consider alternatives who he knows well from the past and can trust,” Ornstein added. “So when the Guendouzi singing was being discussed, Emery would have also liked, as an alternative if the Guendouzi one couldn’t be done or as a more immediate signing he could trust for the here and now, to have signed Steven Nzonzi. “That indicates he likes players he can trust and that he’s worked with at former clubs, and who have experience to do the job now.”
