The Impact of the Great Recession on the Value of Vintage Baseball Cards

This video looks at the sale prices of a cross section of vintage baseball cards before, during and after the Great Recession of 2007-2009. Price data is used to examine what impact the Great Recession had on the prices of cards. Comparisons are made between these card values and losses to the overall U.S. economy during this time. Cards were examined over a ten year period, from 2005-2015.
Methodology:
I started with a list of vintage cards that are established by collectors as some of the most desirable in the hobby. I picked cards that had a pop of at least 100 and traded at least 4 times a year. This excluded some valuable cards that have a low pop count (like the 1952 Mantle). I also looked at cards that were less valuable, to test whether the results found on the top tier cards could be extrapolated to other vintage cards or not.
Sales data was taken from PWCC's Market Price Research page:
This database analyzes only eBay data, not those from other auction houses. The strength of this database is having a huge number of transactions, dating back to 2005.
Once the cards and grades were identified, the sales prices for each year between 2005-2015 were placed into a spreadsheet. All invalid data such as half grades, raw cards, TPG other than PSA, and other variables had to be culled. The goal was to compare cards that carried identical PSA grades over a period of 10 years.
Once the sales data was compiled and cleaned up, the average sale price of each card, per year was determined. Once the averages were obtained, I then looked at the percent that the average sale price went up or down each year. By using the annual percent increase or decrease it allowed me to have a meaningful comparison between cards that had wildly different dollar values.
Once the percentage increases/decreases each year were determined, they were put into a chart form for comparison and examination of any patterns.
