Chamois freed from deep snow after avalanche in southwest Austria
Operators of Austria's national rail company OeBB rescued a chamois trapped in an avalanche on Tuesday (January 8) which blocked tracks near the Gesause National Park.
According to an OeBB spokesman, the train was travelling between the towns of Admont and Hieflau when the driver spotted an avalanche on the tracks at the entrance to the national park.
The train, driving at around 30 km/h (18.6 MPH) came to a halt. The driver then saw the trapped chamois, the spokesman said by telephone.
The spokesman said the chamois was lucky to have been discovered soon after it got trapped because it would not have been able to free itself.
