The title says it all! I'm getting the side panels in place today, and that means one of two things: take normal boards and bevel or rabbet the edges so they can fit into 1/4" grooves on the legs, or, to save wood but increase effort, resaw a single board to fit. I chose the latter.
All in all, I've done a LOT of resawing on this project to save on lumber and on weight. Not that weight is an issue, but having full thickness panels on 3 of the 4 sides would be quite hefty, and costly. Also, it's difficult to get panels that would be wide enough on their own, or join two boards at full thickness to look nice, unless they are sequential in the log. I do have sequential boards, but I want to save on cost, so I put in the sweat power!
My current "record" is a 9+ inch wide board of walnut that I resawed for the back panels (not shown here, but it is in part 15).
If you'd like to stay up to date on the real-time progress for the sideboard, check my instagram account, below. There, you'll see that I'm actually moving along at quite the pace, considering I'm not using any electricity except for lighting and heat (ha!) and since I've got a family and a full-time job!
Thanks so much for watching!
I hope you've enjoyed the progress so far!
