Karl Robinson questions Sunderland; claims Oxford were far better. Jack Ross's Sunderland conceded a late and controversial equaliser as they were held to a 1-1 League One draw by Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.
Karl Robinson was left very frustrated as his Oxford United side were held to a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Saturday, as reported by the Oxford Mail.
Promotion-chasing Sunderland were far from their best at the Kassam Stadium with goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin making a number of outstanding saves to retain their lead, which was provided by a header from centre-back Jimmy Dunne.
But West Ham loanee Marcus Browne struck in the 87th minute as the Black Cats’ luck ran out, although Sunderland argued that the goal should have been ruled out due to an apparent foul on Dunne in the build up.
Speaking to the Oxford Mail, however, Robinson has argued that his side deserved an equaliser, contentious or not, as they were far better than Sunderland on the day.
"Let’s not use that as an excuse, because I thought we were by far the better team here and that’s the bit I’m proud of,” said the former MK Dons and Charlton boss. "I thought we were sensational, at times I thought we were unplayable.
"We could have been 3-0 up at half-time and then we just switched off at a set piece."
Robinson added that Sunderland were lucky to escape punishment for a number of challenges in the first 45, seemingly justifying his view that Oxford were due a slice of luck when Browne found the net with minutes to go.
"What about the fouls on my players in the first half?" he said. "Gavin (Whyte) nearly broke his leg, what about the two-footed challenge on Jamie Hanson? Mous (John Mousinho) goes to ground once and gets a booking.”
The draw means Sunderland are fourth in the League One table and five points adrift of Barnsley in the second automatic promotion position. Jack Ross’s side have two games in hand but they really cannot afford to throw two points away in the final few minutes on a regular basis.
