An outbreak of a disease termed "scleractinian tissue loss disease" has been severely impacting many corals along the southeast Florida coral reef tract for several years now. Intervention strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts and further spread of this disease are being implemented and studied by Erin Schilling, a graduate student at FAU Harbor Branch. Her project will also involve studying the microbial communities of the mucus on these corals over time as disease intervention strategies are implemented.
