Cut Back Outdated Fire Drills, Replace with Current-day Emergency Drills and Allow for More Instruction Time
There will be more instruction time in classrooms each school year if the required 12 fire drills are replaced by four emergency drills that are directed to more present-day emergencies- like school shooters. The sponsor of the bill, Senator Craig Brandt, said safety of students is paramount to him and that emergency drills are important in New Mexico public schools. But the high number of outdated fire drills are no longer needed because of the successful fire suppression systems and technology in schools. He noted the last death in a school because of a fire was in 1958.
He said fire drills use a lot of resources, like city fire trucks that are called out for the drills and that could be used better actually fighting fires.
