Russian President Vladimir Putin said that a lot of work is needed in order to achieve a “mutually acceptable” peace treaty with Japan on the basis of 1956 Joint Declaration, speaking in Moscow after holding a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Putin stressed that "a hard work to create conditions for reaching mutually acceptable solutions" lies ahead of Japan and Russia. He noted that the future decision offered by the negotiators should be "supported by both nations."
The Russian leader also noted that Moscow and Tokyo "agreed to continue our efforts to organise joint economic activities on the South Kuril Islands" in five areas such as aquaculture, creation of greenhouses, development of wind energy, tourism and waste recycling systems.
